HIKING INMAN TRAIL Yellow Springs, Ohio

Hiking Team: Dave Miller, Rosie Miller

Date: April 26, 2023

We hiked this trail in the 700-acre Glen Helen Nature Preserve which has 20 miles of trails. It is the largest private nature preserve in the area and was named a National Natural Landmark in 1965. The 1.3-mile trail descended stone steps to a wooden boardwalk that crossed Yellow Springs Creek. A large beaver dam was just off the boardwalk. The unique creek looked like an elevated, shallow swamp or backwater. A little way up the trail on the right was Pompey’s Pillar, a dark rock projecting up out of the forest. Farther along we passed a wooden bridge over the creek opposite a small cave. The trail turned right and ascended a ridge. Rosie posed by The Yellow Springs, a small spring that looked yellow in color. Farther up the ridge on the right was a small Hopewell Indian Mound. On the other side of the ridge, we saw Birch Creek below and descended a slope to see The Cascades, a small but beautiful waterfall. A wooden bridge crossed the waterfall and creek where from above you could see that the waterfall carved a large travertine bowl around its pool. Lots of plants and colorful wildflowers grew along the trail. We followed the trail back around to our starting point.

CHARLES YOUNG BUFFALO SOLDIERS NATIONAL MONUMENT Wilberforce, Ohio

Expedition Team: Dave Miller, Rosie Miller

Date: April 26, 2023

This National Monument enlightened us about Colonel Young, a former slave, that in 1889, became the third African American to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He was leader of the Buffalo Soldiers who not only fought but patrolled Yellowstone National Park and other parks. The Buffalo Soldiers built roads, trails, and structures in Sequoia, Yosemite, and Glacier NP. He was the first Superintendent of Sequoia National Park. Young installed the fence around the giant Gen. Sherman tree for protection). Young was the first African American military attaché and a diplomat to Haiti. His 1830’s former house was under renovation, so the photos, documentary film, and exhibits were less than a mile away at a seminary library on Wilberforce College campus. We plan to return to the house next year when the renovation is done.

RUNNING AIR FORCE HALF MARATHONS Fairborn, Ohio

Running Team: Dave Miller, Rosie Miller

Date: September 1997, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2009

Beginning in 1997, the United States Air Force annually holds a marathon and half marathon in September. The course begins and ends at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The course takes runners throughout the base and through Fairborn. The first and third year I was part of a four-person 26.2-mile relay team. In 1997, I ran the 8.2-mile leg along for a team consisting of Tom Spence, a blind runner and a lady recovering from a heart attack. In 1999, I ran the 5.1-mile leg as part of the Moraine Police Division team. In 2004, our four-person team was me, Rosie, neighbor Becky Weinel and someone else. I have run the 13.1-mile half marathon three times. I always tried to break two hours and it is always exciting to finish the race as you run the last 100 yards with vintage or WWII airplanes on each side of you down a narrow chute to the finish line. Several years stealth bombers would fly overhead to begin the race. Volunteers and AF staff would man the water stations. One year at the three-mile water station, several volunteers were wearing alien masks and costumes to poke fun at the Hanger 18 UFO legend.

THE QUEEN MARY Long Beach, California

Expedition Team: Dave Miller, Rosie Miller, Shane Miller, Jacque Miller, Holly Miller

Date: August 8, 2009

After dropping Matt off in Arizona for preseason college football practice we continued our vacation in California. We visited Long Beach’s favorite roadside attraction. This famous ship icon is nicknamed “The Grey Ghost” and the ocean liner sailed the North Atlantic Ocean from the 1930’s to late 1967. Queen Mary’s last voyage was in October/November 1967, leaving England and arriving at Long Beach. Today, it serves as a tourist attraction featuring restaurants, a museum, and a hotel. The Queen Mary is over 1,000 feet long and has 12 decks. We explored the ship all day, then took the haunted encounters tour called “Ghosts & Legends of the Queen Mary” where we went down to the boiler room area and the old swimming pool. Later, we took the “Behind the Scenes Guided Tour” and then enjoyed an expensive dinner. That night as the family reclined in the cabin, I roamed the hallways conducting my own paranormal investigation.

HIKING GERMANTOWN METROPARK GREEN TRAIL Germantown, Ohio

Hiking Team: Dave Miller, Rosie Miller

Date: April 10, 2023

We hiked 8.3 miles on this beautiful spring day, mostly on the Orange Trail but 1.4 miles of the hike was on the Green Trail which we had never hiked before. It was a great find. We saw a colorful turtle and two small, picturesque ponds. A half mile later, going off trail, discovered one small, beautiful waterfall.

MIAMISBURG MOUND Miamisburg, Ohio

Expedition Team: Dave Miller

Date: March 2022 & March 2023

This is Miamisburg’s number one roadside attraction. The mound is one of the two largest conical mounds in eastern North America and the largest prehistoric burial mound in Ohio. The mound is 65 feet tall and 800 feet in circumference. An empty chamber was found in 1869 about 28 feet deep in the mound. I climbed the 116 steps to the top of the mound enjoying the view. The mound sits atop a ridge above the Great Miami River next to a golf course.

DAYTON AVIATION HERITAGE NATIONAL HISTORIC PARK FLYING FIELD INTERPRETIVE CENTER Fairborn, Ohio

Expedition Team: Dave Miller

Date: April 1, 2023

Located on the Wright Patterson Air Force Base, on top of a hill overlooking the base and the Huffman Dam, the small center focusses on the Wright Brothers development of the world’s first practical airplane at Huffman Prairie in 1904 & 1905, their flying school which started in 1910 and accomplishments of Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Outside of the center, there is a large 17-foot-high granite memorial saluting the Wright Brothers and several Indian mounds. It was nice to see a couple photos of the WB hydroaeroplanes or seaplanes, which were tested on the Miami River in Moraine from 1912-1914. This site is the 4th of six sites making up the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historic Park.

# HAUNTED B-24 LIBERATOR BOMBER National Museum of the United States Air Force, Dayton, Ohio

Investigation Team: Dave Miller, Tyler Kaltenbach

Investigation Date:  February 27 & March 10, 2020, April 1, 2023

“The Strawberry Bitch”, a B-24 Liberator bomber, had a range of over 2,400 miles carrying 5,000 pounds of bombs.  The plane has several paranormal claims.  Visitors say the belly gunner who died on a mission still haunts the plane, rattles and clanks the machine gun and a shadow figure has been seen inside. Mysterious lights have been seen in the plane. One night a custodian sweeping around the plane was touched, slapped in the face and then he saw a face in the airplane.
