For Rosie’s 61^st birthday we had lunch in downtown Tipp City at the Coldwater Café, a unique restaurant housed within a former bank building. Our table was located in the former bank vault. Food was outstanding including their famous English tea cake. Afterwards, we changed clothes and hopped on the nearby Great Miami River Recreational Trail for a 15 mile bike ride south towards north Dayton and back. Beside the bike trail at Tipp we viewed an original Canal Boat that used to traffic the Miami & Erie Canal. After the bicycle ride we drove to Possum Creek Metropark and took a nap in her hammock.

We rented bicycles and biked 16 miles from downtown on Columbus Ave. past Fisherman’s Wharf (photo#1), through the Presidio (former US Army Fort & now a park) & across the Golden Gate Bridge (Photo#2). On the north side of the bridge we biked up a steep winding road (Photo#3) to the Fort Baker ruins and a great view of the bay. We then biked from the bridge to the small, picturesque town of Sausalito where we grabbed lunch at a café. Sitting outside (Photo#4) & eating the view from Sausalito back across the bay to SF was beautiful. We grabbed our bikes and hopped a ferry boat passing Alcatraz prison (Photo#5) along the way to Fisherman’s Wharf & Pier 39.

The 21mile bike/walk trail runs the length of this British Territory island. We bicycled 11 miles total to Gibbs Hill Lighthouse and back. It was a beautiful day. We saw moon arches (which symbolize eternal love) in the front of many houses. We passed two above ground cemeteries and lots of colorful painted houses. The former railway passed under several short tunnels of brick or shrubbery. Gibbs Hill Lighthouse was built in 1846 and is one of the oldest cast iron lighthouses in the world. We parked the bikes and climbed 185 steps up the 117 foot tall lighthouse and saw great panoramic views northeast to Hamilton the Capital.

To celebrate Rosie’s 52^nd birthday, she wanted to bike 52 miles. We began on the Little Miami Bike Trail beginning at Spring Valley and bicycled 26 miles south to Morrow and back. At mile 42 we stopped for lunch at near Waynesville at the “Peddlar” at Corwin. This restaurant specializes in British cuisine. When we finished mile 52 line Rosie said she wanted to go 8 more miles. We continued four miles north towards Xenia and back. Grand total – a 60 mile birthday bike ride by my very fit, beautiful wife!

Date: September 2015, 2016, and 2022

This fun bicycle ride stretched 37 miles through the scenic Germantown & Farmersville Countryside. We biked over the Germantown dam, over a covered bridge and past lots of farmlands. At the two rest areas provided by local Rotarians, we enjoyed hot pretzels and refreshments. In 2022, a new route took us over an 1870 covered bridge.

Beginning in downtown Dayton, we pedaled 33 miles on various bike paths to Xenia and back. The bike ride was a fun-raiser for the fight against abortion. I was feeling pretty good as I was between cancer chemo treatment 6 and 7 and was compelled to support this event since legal abortion is just plain murder of unborn children. Along the way we passed remnants of the Twin Towers, Beavercreek’s 911 exhibit. My butt and legs were sore at the finish and when I got off the bicycle I was walking like John Wayne.

We rented bikes and rode 12 miles along the river bike path and Louisville Riverwalk beginning just east of downtown Louisville and west past several parks and the Belle of Louisville Riverboat. We biked across the Ohio River on the Big Four Pedestrian Bridge (Photo#2) into Indiana and turned around at Van Dyke Park. Great views of the river. West of downtown I climbed a few railroad box cars (Photo#3). Also, west of town is the remaining part of the one mile long L & I Railroad Bridge (also called the Ohio Falls Bridge) built in 1870 (Photo#4). It was the first bridge to cross the Ohio River and the longest iron bridge in the USA at that time. By 1916, three hundred trains crossed daily. Afterwards we had dinner at Joe’s Crab Shack right on the river. I then met some friends and we did a ghost hunting investigation at haunted Waverly Hills Sanatorium from 9pm to 4am.

The Dayton Cycling Club staged their annual bike ride beginning at Brookville. You could ride 33, 50, 67 or 100 miles. In 2012 we peddled the 33 mile route. In 2012 we peddled the 67 mile route northwest on a circular route on bike paths and country roads that wound through the beautiful, peaceful country and small villages eventually returning to Brookville. We biked through a couple covered bridges and saw lots of creative “barn” artwork. The last photo shows the three of us at the beginning of the ride and for some reason, Rosie put her bike helmet on backwards and didn’t notice. We told her a couple miles later. This was my longest ride on my mountain bike and when I was finished, I walked like John Wayne. My butt was sore.

The 40^th annual Wright Wride consisted of rides of 25, 40, 64 or 100 miles. We chose the 40 mile route and began at Brookville. We headed southwest on the bike path then through rolling country roads or state roads west to Eaton and then back to Brookville. We viewed or biked across five covered bridges on the way.  Many of the barns had artistic paintings or quilt designs on them.

Rosie participated in the Dayton Right for Life Bike Ride from the University of Dayton to the University of Notre Dame at South Bend, Indiana. Rosie was the #1 fund raiser for the event. Twenty-four people participated in the 260 mile bike ride over the four day period. The ride took Rosie through many bike trails, back roads, Amish Country and small towns. In the final photo everyone rejoiced at reaching Notre Dame campus (L to R – Bob Huesman, Joyce Wirtz, Nancy, Rosie and the leg of Paul Coudron).
