WORLD’S LARGEST BOLL WEEVIL Bishopville, South Carolina

Expedition Team: Dave Miller, Rosie Miller

Date: October 29, 2021

We visited the South Carolina Cotton Museum which had educational exhibits on the history of cotton growing in the county from tools, looms, spinning and weaving equipment, a Lizardman exhibit and war veteran exhibits. The Boll Weevil, called the “Little Black Bug from Mexico”, arrived in South Carolina in 1929 and was not totally eradicated until 2001. Only ¼ inch in size in real life (Photo#1), the world’s largest boll weevil is actually a model replica about 4 to 5 feet long (Photo#2 & #3). It would be a good prop in a horror movie.
