CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE Wallace, Idaho

Date: June 25, 2022

One of the silliest roadside attractions I have ever seen, the city was declared in 2004 by former Mayor Ron Garitone as the center of the universe. In the historic downtown on the corner of 6th and Bank Streets, four blue signs point to the middle of the road. In the middle of the road is a manhole cover identifying that here is the Center of the Universe. Why is Wallace the Center of the Universe. Because Mayor Garitone proclaimed, “Prove that it isn’t. If you cannot prove that Wallace is not the Center of the Universe, then it must be the Center of the Universe”. Great logic and a great marketing ploy to draw people to the city. The four sets of initials on the manhole cover stand for the four local prominent mining companies.
