At the western part of Shawnee Lookout Park, we ascended a steep path and trekked west 1.4 miles out and back through a shaded forest. This higher ground was once an Adena Indian village site with several kiosks along the trail noting a mound, earthwork, or trash pit. Later, this ridge top was occupied by Shawnee Indians. The area was a strategic elevated position and offered abundant wildlife and major waterways nearby. We eventually came to an overlook, looking west with a panoramic view of the Ohio River and the Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana state lines. To our north was the Great Miami River which emptied into the Ohio River.
