VA 5K RUN Dayton, Ohio

Running Team: Rosie Miller, Dave Miller

Date: May 2006

This Memorial Day 5K Run was memorable not that Rosie finished as the third overall woman runner (since she always wins and places) but a surprise person was on the podium – me. I surprised myself and finished third in my age group. The Veterans Administration campus and hospital grounds have a great history after President Lincoln authorized in 1865 the building of several National Homes for the Disabled across the USA to treat and house injured and disabled veterans of the Civil War. The race course took us past the grotto gardens, the old Protestant Church, the veterans cemetery, and the many administration buildings. As I ran past, I saluted Pvt. George Fair, the famous Civil War Soldier Monument who served the Union Army from 1861 to 1865. The marble statue, carved in 1884, is located under the portico at the entrance to the VA Hospital. The Central Branch House of the VA is designated a National Historic Landmark. This was a fun and historic run.
