HIKED OUTCROPPING TRAIL Chimney Rock, North Carolina

Hiking Team: Dave Miller, Rosie Miller

Date: December 1, 2023

Day two back at Chimney Rock State Park for more hiking. It was 50 degrees and light rain, but we were dressed for the weather. The .5-mile trail of over 500+ steps ascended about 175 feet over and around large rocks and crevasses. We ducked and crawled through Crevasse Pass. We stopped and looked down Gneiss Cave, blocked by an iron door to protect the bat population (Photo #1). Halfway up the trail we rested in the Grotto (Photo#3), a natural mini cave with a rock outcropping where we paused for a prayer moment while overlooking the gorge. The trail of steps continued upward and took us to the Subway, a curving tunnel through the rocks that we had to crawl and squeeze through. This was one fun trail.
