HIKED BASIN LOOP TRAIL Big Bend National Park, Texas

Hiking Team: Dave Miller, Rosie Miller

Date: May 8, 2024

We picked up trail maps at the Panther Junction Visitor Center then drove nine miles of sharp curves and steep grades up to Chisos Basin. The trailhead began at an elevation of 5,401 feet which kept the temperatures in the 70’s for our 2.2-mile hike on this moderate difficulty trail. This circular trail climbed towards Emory Peak at 7,825 feet where our trail connected with Pinnacles Trail to lead up to the peak. Our trail gave us nice views of the Basin area. We kept on the lookout for black bears, mountain lions, rattlesnakes and javalinas. Eventually, the trail slowly descended and at times we could see “the Window” (a break in the mountain) in the distance. The ranger kept track of who hiked each of the three trails here in case a rescue was needed due to the heat.
