The first rodeo ever held was here in Pecos on July 4, 1883. The city continues the tradition by holding a top rodeo every summer at the Buck Jackson Arena. The city had an art exhibit throughout the town, painted cowboy boots. Driving north out of Pecos to Carlsbad, New Mexico we traveled on “Death Highway” due to the large amount of traffic accidents involving tanker trucks.
