HIKED THE BIG CAVE TRAIL Palo Duro State Park, Canyon, Texas

Hiking Team: Dave Miller, Justin Eller, Holly Eller

Date: May 25, 2024

There were no outlaws at this hole in the wall. This short trail took us past lizards to this majestic cave in the rock wall. We could see the vertical cave cut in the distance. As we approached the entrance, we had to climb some large rocks to enter. The cave shade and cooler temperature was nice. The cave wasn’t very deep but was tall with an opening at the upper rear section of the cave.

Since we had hiked the 5.2-mile Lighthouse Rock Trail and now this Cave Trail, we called it a day. Just outside the park we pulled into the Sad Monkey Mercantile and I ordered from the food truck the Palo Duro Burger and West Texas Tots. In the field beside where we ate were several huge Texas Longhorns that Justin wanted to wrestle. We saw several beautiful scissor-tailed flycatcher birds and prairie dogs.
