BIKED THE GAP OHIOPYLE TO CONFLUENCE Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania

Biking Team: Dave Miller, Rosie Miller

Date: September 4, 2024

We biked southeast on the GAP (Great Allegheny Passage Bike Trail) through a shady forest of trees parallel to the Youghiogheny River. The bike trail was not paved but was made from crushed limestone, which was dry and not slippery. After eleven miles we entered the borough of Confluence (Population 724). We crossed a bridge and watched men fly fishing for trout.

At this point was the confluence of the Casselman River, Laurel Hill Creek and the Youghiogheny River. Confluence was called Turkeyfoot back in the 1700’s and in 1754, Lt. Col. George Washington camped here. Washington canoed to Ohiopyle and back as he was scouting for a safe water route to Pittsburgh. We grabbed lunch at Mitch’s Restaurant and sat with two bikers from California. As we biked 11 miles back to Ohiopyle saw ducks, blue herons and enjoyed the flowing river and rapids beside the trail.
