GRAVE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD New Smyrna Beach, Florida

Here’s a unique Florida roadside attraction. It’s a grave in the middle of the road. The story goes that in 1860, 16-year-old Charles Dummett died in a hunting accident. He was buried where he fell. A watchdog adorns the top of the tomb. As the city of New Smyrna Beach, Florida grew in population, the developers found it was too much trouble to relocate the grave, so they built Canova Drive around it. The grave lays between some palm trees. I missed it the first time I drove by but then saw it coming back.
