Hiking Team: Dave Miller, Rosie Miller
Date: March 7, 2025
After mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, we left the car at the church and walked next door to where we saw a giant cross on top of a hill. The trail winded for a mile across a pasture and up a steep trail (a 400 feet elevation gain). It was a tough hike. The paved trail was covered in poop as the pasture contained many cattle. It was a hot, windless morning and I had an interesting thought on the way – I felt what Jesus felt like as he was carrying the heavy cross up to Calvary hill and the poop on the path was us sinful humans. What a relief it was when we finally crested the summit and sat beside the giant stone cross looking at Hanna, the coast and the ocean below. You could see little St. Mary’s Church off to the southwest. I love (Photo#5) of Rosie peacefully contemplating life while she sits at the foot of the cross (or maybe she was thinking how much she missed her fruit smoothies on this trip). The one mile walk back downhill was much easier other than stepping around the cattle poop. I did see lots of butterflies and two mongooses running across the trail ahead of us. Further on were eight heads of cattle glaring at us for trespassing on their territory. I didn’t like their attitude, so I threw a hard cow patty at them, and they fled.
