HIKED LAVA TUBE TRAIL & SEA ARCH Hana, Maui, Hawaii

Hiking Team: Dave Miller, Rosie Miller

Date: March 7, 2025

At Wai’anapanapa State Park, after we hiked the coastal trail and recrossed the black sand beach, we came across a unique feature – a lava tube cave. I had to duck down and crawl for ten feet before entering a chamber where I could stand up. The chamber or tube was about 35 feet long with waves splashing inside at the end. Across the water I could see a lava created a low hanging lava sea arch. Since it was low tide, I walked the entire length of the tube. Rosie entered the tube behind me, and we took several photos. I yelled to see if I could hear my echo and yes indeed, I heard it.

We crawled back out of the lava tube, hiked .4 miles down the trail past the sea arch and came to a blowhole. We patiently waited for a massive wave to hit, and it shot water up and out of the blow hole. Nearby about ten half-asleep feral cats watched the action.

After leaving the state park, we grabbed fish tacos at the local food truck court.
