Driving across “Alligator Alley” in southern Florida we turned onto Tamiami Trail in the Everglades. Down the road in this tropical wilderness, I stopped at the Ochopee Post Office, a pint size Roadside Attraction. The “Smallest Post Office in the USA” is only 8 feet by 7 feet in size and was a former irrigation pipe shed for an arrange farm. When the local general store/post office burned down in 1953 the shed became the post office. It serves about 400 residents and two Indian tribes. For only $1 each, you can purchase a post card of the post office which is stamped with the famous Ochopee postmark.
