From our campsite, we walked onto the nearby Arkansas River Trail and then up onto this big bridge was for pedestrians and bicycles only. The bridge is the nation’s only pedestrian and bicycle bridge with a lift span which is locked into place in the raised position to permit barge traffic on the river. The bridge was originally built in 1899 as a railroad bridge then converted in 2011 as the eastern crossing of the 15-mile River Trail. Crossing the wide Arkansas River separating Little Rock from North Little Rock, the River Trail continues on the south side of the river past downtown. We enjoyed this scenic two-mile walk seeing wildlife, greenspace and skyscrapers. At night the bridge is lit with colorful, innovative LED lights.
