BIKED ANN & ROY BUTLER BIKE TRAIL Austin, Texas

Biking Team: Dave Miller, Rosie Miller

Date: May 6, 2024

We drove from our Leander campground a half hour south to Austin and bicycled the 10-mile loop around Lady Bird (Johnson) Lake. We began near the Holly Street area where we passed a couple of miles of beautiful wildflowers. Half of the trail was in wooded areas. We crossed over Longhorn Dam and came upon a pack of goats that were fenced off and eating poison ivy. I talked to a ranger who told me that the goats were immune to poison ivy.  Once the poison ivy was removed from an area, the fencing and goats were moved farther along the bike path. Very innovative. We detoured off the paved trail to a 1.3-mile boardwalk that winds along the lake’s southern shore giving us beautiful views of downtown Austin across the Colorado River. I counted over 300 turtles sunning themselves on rocks. People could rent kayaks or paddleboards. The trail switched from paved to hard dirt and back to pavement. The trail was constantly busy with young professionals either walking or biking. We passed a statue to blues musician Stevie Ray Vaughn.
