HIKED KEALIA COASTAL BOARDWALK TRAIL Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, Maui, Hawaii

Hiking Team: Dave Miller, Rosie Miller

Date: March 4, 2025

This delightful .8-mile hike near Kihei was on a boardwalk over the wetlands, mudflats and bogs. There were many interpretive signs describing the local birds and habitat. This was a very popular birding area where you can see Hawaiian coot, stilt and other species. This sanctuary is the site where waterfowl from Asia and North America come to winter. There were three access ramps where we could exit the boardwalk and walk along sandy Sugar Beach and Ma’alaea Bay (Photo#4).

Across the road is the largest natural pond remaining on Maui. Before paining protection, this area was once used as one of the first runways in Maui, and in WWII was used to train Marines.
