HIKED MOUND TRAIL Indian Mound Preserve, Cedarville, Ohio

Hiking Team: Dave Miller

Date: March 19, 2024

This trail began near the log house and took me north on a 1.1 mile out and back trail to an Adena Mound built between 500 BC and 00 AD. I ascended the trail and saw the mound and steps in the distance.  The mound is 30 feet tall and 140 feet in diameter. I carefully walked up 74 steps to the top of the mound and looked around 360 degrees. This mound was used for either burial or lookouts and was usually built in a large open meadow (one was nearby through the thin tree line) or near water (a small stream connecting with Massie Creek was a short distance away). The creek provided rock and mud to construct the mound. The nearby plaque stated the land and mound was donated to the state back in 1933. After enjoying the view from the top of the mound and walking around its circumference, I hiked back down the Mound Trail connecting with the Rim Trail.
